The thawing method and warm-exposure time determine whether uncooked food can return directly to the freezer.

| Thawed in refrigerator | May refreeze uncooked within the food's refrigerator window. |
| Thawed in cold water | Cook before refreezing. |
| Thawed in microwave | Cook before refreezing. |
| Still has ice crystals or is 40°F or below | May refreeze or use. |
| Above 40°F over 2 hours | Discard perishables; the limit is 1 hour above 90°F. |
